I have Never Been This Late in My Life!

This is one goodbye I would give the world for, but I will never get that chance. As a result of my multiple missed flights delays, the flight my wife and I had our travel delayed from a 30 hrs flight to Singapore a 96hr flight. I was supposed to arrive on the 10 June 2008. Not only did we had a arduous flight due the many disappointing delays, we also missed the demised of my dying father. The One up there must have a reason to delay us from getting to see dad in time. Why I know not, but I sure miss my dad.

At the end of this Intel, I like to share a few tips, if you were to travel overseas. This is not the first time I have traveled out of the country but certainly, the longest.

Do not expect the airlines to compensate you for your loss, great or small, mine resulting in missing my dad's passing on as a result of multiple delays. He died just 8 hrs before I arrived. I would have been by his side. I wrote a letter to United Airlines and even included dad’s Death Certificate and detailed the chain of events that lead to a 3-day delay. I asked for compensation such as air miles to fly but all I got was a $25-off voucher toward my next flight purchase with United Airlines. I could get a better discount shopping on the internet.

Perhaps I am just echoing what many have experience and sounding like a broken record. But still, I want to voice my dissatisfaction. I have attached United Airlines reply below.

Reply from United Airlines Customer Relations (Ref# 7758402A)

"Thank you for contacting us about your and your wife's travel experience. First, on behalf of United, I do want to extend our condolences on the passing of your father.
I regret to learn that you missed your father's memorial service due to flight irregularities. Flight irregularities of any kind do cause major inconveniences for our customers, I realize, and I certainly don't question the feelings of frustration that can arise as a result. As one who flies so frequently with us I'm sure you know; firsthand, that our industry is vulnerable to a number of challenges that can. and do, affect our operation on a daily basis. Inclement weather, mechanical problems. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) air traffic situations and crew scheduling issues all affect our ability to meet our on-time performance goals each day. As such, we do advise our customers that flight schedules are not guaranteed and are subject to change, sometimes without notice. Still. I regret that you were inconvenienced and I apologize for the trouble caused as a result.
While we can not make up for the inconvenience that you had experienced, in an effort to express our sincere apologies, I would like to present you with an electronic travel certificates as goodwill gesture. To redeem your certificates on united.com and ensure the value is calculated properly, please enter the certificate number on the home page Fare Finder box or on the Create Itinerary: Shop for flights screen located under Planning Travel. Your certificate will only be redeemed if you select Purchase.
Please know that your business is important to us. We hope that you will give us another opportunity to better meet your needs in the future.
Sincerely..."

Below are a list of tips I have learn just in this one trip which I hope will help you should you have to make a long flight journey:

1)Check for flight delays before you travel. Most of the airlines allow you to check status online. Your initial flight if domestic, all the more to check for delays as it will delay the rest of your connecting flight.

2)Do not give up easily. In my case, I was told to go home and come back the next day. Don’t! Ask them to put to on another plane and even other airlines from another company.

3)Ask for you Meal Coupon. I did not know I was entitled to a meal coupon if delays were 4 hours or more. They canceled my flight twice and I did not know I could do that. The airlines will not tell you. The only reason I found out was when I helped to translate for a group of tourist from China going back to Beijing for the Olympics.

4)Take the late flight anyway. If your flight is late and you might miss the next connecting flight, take it anyway. I met a gentleman at the airport who advice me. His logic was that chances are if due to weather, the connecting flight may be delayed too. Also, if flight from a smaller airport to a larger one, you will have more options of airline and the customer support may be better. If I had not listened to him, our flight would have delayed for 5 days at least.

5)Pack at least 2 sets of clothes and underwear in your hand carry luggage. The airline had to put us up in a hotel but they will not provide all meals. More importantly, they don’t provide any vouchers for t-shirts or underwear. We had to wear the same stuff for 3 days. Yikes!!

6)Bring your wireless laptop or i-pod. I was able to tap on some free wireless to call via Skype and check airline flight status for free in most airports and hotels

That’s all for now and for those who have been through what I have you know how it feels. At the back of my heart, there’s still a little part of me that cries out, “Papa I am so sorry i didn't get back in time to send you off, but I will see you again someday. I love you Papa!”
